Tires are about to undergo a major transformation with a new airless tire created by Michelin called the Uptis. Developed in collaboration with GM, who plans to have the tire on its own passenger cars, the Uptis was created with a unique tire structure that is designed to never go flat or experience a blowout. This is accomplished through a composite rubber and a proprietary high-strength resin embedded fiberglass to create the airless wheel structure. This structure also reduces the raw material needed to produce the tire and requires virtually no maintenance whatsoever.
GM plans to fit a fleet of Bolt EVs with the Uptis tires, which will go into testing later this year in Michigan. A consumer version of the tire is planned to be available on their cars by 2024.
