Ford's Edge crossover has officially joined the performance-focused ST lineup and it also stands as the first SUV to wear the ST badge. The company is positioning the car as a value proposition against some truly high-end rivals. We're talking about SUVs like the SQ5, Macan S, and the GLC43 AMG. So what's Ford bringing to the table to play in this exclusive category? Quite a bit actually.
The Edge ST is powered by a 2.7L turbocharged V6 EcoBoost engine that produces 335 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque. Those numbers are right within the spectrum of its European competition and you're getting Intelligent AWD standard. You've also got ST-specific tweaks like enhanced throttle response, sportier shift patterns, optimized engine braking, an ST-tuned sport suspension, deeper side skirts, an available ST Performance Brake package, and Electronic Stability Control with four different AdvanceTrac driving modes.
And while the ST-tuned performance is the defining feature of this model, it's the practicality that might just sway potential customers away from its higher-priced rivals. The EcoBoost engine gives the Edge better fuel efficiency and none of the comparable models from Audi, Mercedes, or Porsche can compare to the amount of cargo space in the ST.
When it comes to the interior, you'll find deep-bolstered ST sport seats, ST badging throughout, and a whole host of technology and driver safety systems to keep you connected and safe on the road. This includes their latest Sync system that now features Alexa integration, wireless charging pads, and the optional Co-Pilot360 system, which features driver assist technologies such as Pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping.
As for looks, the car gets signature ST design elements such as a unique front-end that separates it from the rest of the Edge lineup with its wide mesh grille that also helps cool the engine. And what's a performance car without a slick pair of wheels? The ST will come with 20-inch bright-machined aluminum wheels with high-gloss black paint or an optional 21-inch gloss black polished wheel. And like the rest of the ST lineup you can spec the car in Ford Performance Blue paint.
Pricing starts at $42,355, which is actually the only performance SUV you'll find at under $43,000 and when you load it up with all the options you land at $54,010. That's highly competitive with the rest of the market and the value they're offering is pretty compelling if you ask us. All in all, there's a lot of like here and if you want the most bang for your buck it's hard to go wrong with Edge ST.
